internet tethering with sprint htc hero

Hey.. I'm sry I'm new to the Android world I'm use to my HTC Diamond and how I just download one cab file and I was able to tether no problem.. However, I'm a little confused on how to get it to work on my Hero. I see everyone saying I have to have my Hero Rooted? Which rom do I install? Do i use the flash rom that I seen on the site and if so which version? Can anyone tell me how thats works or what I can do? Please help thanks

please ignore this i figured it out and got my tethering to work perfectly as a wifi connection with g1...

It does, just tried it myself on my wifes ipod touch.

Picked up hero on Sat. Coming from winmo. Been reading about getting the tethering to work on android for about a week before I got the phone. I need to have the tethering. I really like the hero so far but Im running into a issue getting the internet sharing to work.

I rooted the phone, did not install the recovery flash (I have no intention of flashing).
I installed the pre version of the wifi sharing ap posted earier in this thread. It was working and showing up as available wifi connection, however when I go to connect it will say it is connected on both the phone and the PC however I get no browsing ability. Basically no connection, tried all options in the wifi prog to enable connection with no success

I tried the mobile network/mns OFF then ON method also posted earlier in this thread AFTER I had root. I got it to work and navigate the web with some mild success. Unfortunatly while browsing around in the settings, I happened to see the available firmware v 1.56.651 was available. I went ahead and downloaded and upgraded.

Did the firmware update UNROOT my hero? Because now neither wifi sharing or the other method work at all. Infact the enable MNS box at the very bottom is greyed out and will not let me check it. the first time I tried after the update all I got were the error 67 messages. now I cannot even check the box to turn it on. It used to only be able to be checked when the mobile network was checked.

I really need to get this net sharing or I will have to return the hero...

Mine works just fine. I used the first pre-kitchen to root the phone makes it really easy, with the wifi tether program the Phone acts like a wireless router, and able to connect wifi laptop to this router called "androidtether" by default, the wep is 128 bit and your able to set your own pass key. I have not tried the bluetooth tether yet but sure it will work as well.

The program I used is (wireless_tether_1_70-pre1_htc.apk)

I just started over. I did the same as you. Used the pre kitchen to root the phone. It gave me a few errors but still seemed to move along. Restarted the phone after it was complete. Installed the 1.7 tethering and it is working.

May be a dumb question, but can you add 1.7 tethering to your Hero if it is not rooted?

Yes you can. But it will not work haha.
