htc hero sync problems/software?

Bought the Hero today - Computer won't recognize the device via htc sync.

instructions say that first time USB connection should cause Phone Connection Wizard to run but that didn't happen.

Instructions say to click on "Synchronize Now" button on HTC Sync window if wizard doesn't start but when I do that - nothing happens at all. Task manager reports HTC sync is "running" as opposed to "not responding."

Lower right hand corner of HTC Sync windows always says "disconnected." Even the second menu item on HTC Sync labled "Sync Manager" doesn't do anything when clicked.

Tech support no help - said to reinstall software (version 2.0.33) which I did - same problem. Tech support is suppose to call back in the AM (we'll see if that ever happens) to see if I'm running ok.

Any ideas?

You have pulled down notifications and chosen htc sync on the phone right?

notification only shows the USB icon not the double-arrow-circle connection icon. when I pull down notification all it says is:

"Ongoing
USB connected
Select to copy files to/from your computer"

also - on the tray icon the Sychronize Now and Sync Manager selections are greyed out. The only selections not greyed are Open, About and Exit

ok - I finally got the software working - tried so many things that I can't recall which made it work...BUT....of course on my first calendar only sync - I now have DUPLICATE entries in the phone. I don't dare sync contacts now!

So there must be a fix. How can I mass delete all calendar entries in the phone? Then I would re-sync being careful to have a one way computer phone sync but I don't recall seeing that as a option.

Anyway, how do your delete all calendar items in the phone?

Please oh please what did you do to get it to sync

Got it. I installed HTC sync from off of the phone and enabled usb debugging and it worked like a charm.

I after fiddling and farting forever - remember, HTC Sync was not recognizing/connecting to my Hero - I happened to reboot the PHONE - and viola!

Nothing in the instructions even hinted that was a step in the process1

So at least now I am syncing but with problems such as duplicate entries, all non-person contacts i.e. businesses show as "unknown", etc. etc.

Don't know what to tell you about the duplicates since I am new to Android but I you reminded me of another importand step I took. I was having problems getting my internet to work so we did a hard reset this morning. I wonder if that had something to do with it connecting today.
