htc hero sync problems/software?

Bought the Hero today - Computer won't recognize the device via htc sync.

instructions say that first time USB connection should cause Phone Connection Wizard to run but that didn't happen.

Instructions say to click on "Synchronize Now" button on HTC Sync window if wizard doesn't start but when I do that - nothing happens at all. Task manager reports HTC sync is "running" as opposed to "not responding."

Lower right hand corner of HTC Sync windows always says "disconnected." Even the second menu item on HTC Sync labled "Sync Manager" doesn't do anything when clicked.

Tech support no help - said to reinstall software (version 2.0.33) which I did - same problem. Tech support is suppose to call back in the AM (we'll see if that ever happens) to see if I'm running ok.

Any ideas?
