"Messages" App crashing

So I use Handcent as my primary texting program and everytime I get a new text, the messages app requests a force close (but I can get and send messages fine with Handcent).

The problem is that I can't even open the messages app without it force closing indefinitely, I am unable to delete any message threads in my phone or handcent just hangs and when I was still in 1.5, I never really got handcent to delete my messages correctly but the messages app worked fine.

In the meantime I'm going to attempt removing the messages app and then reinstalling it. I wish the system could function with just handcent so both didn't have to be open all the time

Re: "Messages" App crashing

You have to go into the messaging app settings and uncheck the "auto retrieve" option. If you cannot open it and get to the settigns without the FC, then you may want to remove it completely, though I have no idea if that will have adverse effects.

I'll just nandroid backup before hand and then try a removal/reinstallation.

Tell ya how it ends up

Edit: Just got into the settings in the messages app before it F/C'd and Auto Recieve was unclicked already. So I'll just try the removal of it

Re: "Messages" App crashing

*Update*
Well I uninstalled Messages and can still receive text messages so until I run into any issues, it's staying off.
I don't get the force close message anymore (obviously) and can now delete old threads of messages.

Though I wonder if it's supposed to take as long as it does, batch mode delete is impossible and will f/c handcent but I can delete them one at a time (with a hang time proportional to the size of the thread).

Re: "Messages" App crashing

*Another Update*
I just ended up clearing out all my text messages with the Fresh Pre-Kitchen and now my messages program (restored my nandroid image) doesn't force close anymore.

Thought I may still uninstall it since I didn't see any adverse affects with it gone outside of possibly messages not arriving right away (which I have no way to test). Is there anything really bad that would happen if I did??

I guess this is the only way to erase large threads of text messages is to purge them all.
