I used to have a diamond and synced contacts through outlook. So here's what I did:

Export your outlook contacts into a .csv file
Make a new gmail address dedicated to your Hero
Import the .csv file into gmail
Clean up your contacts if they look funny (it sometimes happens when you import .csv files
Forward all of your email addresses to your new gmail address

There is also a setting in gmail that allows you to set your reply to address to your original gmail accounts email address.

Hope that helps.

That's one solution but it's a lot to go through. Plus I think if you set the phone to not sync, it should not synch. That's the real issue. However, just to offer some work around help. The androids I've played with (waiting for mine to come in) have the option to select which contact groups you synch to the phone. If nothing else you could create a new contact group called phone and just put a bogus contact in there. Name it Ziek so it's at the end of your contacts list and then just tell the android to synch that group. Then the contacts you have on your phone will be the only ones you stand to lose if it erases stuff again. Just an idea that I can't test at the moment. be sure to back up everything first.

The smart thing to do is tell your phone only to sync to your "My Contacts" list in Google. Then clean up and arrange your Google My Contacts list.

Done.

I'll make sure to ask everyone, including the craigslist people, for their name and address.

Plus you said you use it for business and thats why you do it. I dont use it for business, so its not really the same thing.

Thank you for the useful post. Really couldnt give a shit if they are formatted properly since this post was about *not syncing them*.

Dagger. Change your phone so it doesn't sync "all contacts" and instead only syncs the "My Contacts" group.

Gmail will not automatically put any addresses in the "My Contacts" group. Only add the contacts you want to have in your phone in the "My Contacts" group. Then you will have your most important, properly-formatted contacts on your phone and they will be synced with and backed up at Gmail.

If you hadnt noticed after 2 pages of useful alternatives that there is no way to stop syncing, then take your damn hero back and get something else. IT IS A GOOGLE PHONE, ITS PURPOSE IS TO INTEGRATE WITH GOOGLE PRODUCTS!!! If you dont like it then its one less pissed off person about something so simple as not being lazy.

There is no option to sync only certain groups. When I go to people, menu, I get add group, delete group. Where is this magic select group option?\

AND ITS PURPOSE IS TO INTEGRATE WITH WHAT YOU WANT.

I'm actually editing this to remove the instructions I had posted because I'm so fed up with your attitude.

So, I'll just say: Oh, OK. I guess I completely made it up. It must be pure magic that my phone only syncs the 150 contacts I have in my My Contacts Gmail group and not the 1300 I have in my All Contacts group. I'm like the Harry F'in Potter of Android. Lucky me!

I will try to find a way to do a screen shot so you can let me know if I'm wrong or right. I'm being attacked because I'm upset that this phone that I really enjoy isn't functioning properly. Whether its because of me or the phone is irrelevant. I'm doing something to try and fix it and I have people telling me I'm lazy. I'm sorry you don't "appreciate the sarcasm." There is no option for this, please believe me. People --> Groups button on the bottom --> Add group, delete group.

EDIT: If you're fed up, fine. Same help I've been getting.
