Rooting and flashing a recovery image will not zap your data, nor will flashing hero ROMs (although sometimes a wipe is suggested prior to flash). Of course if you RUU back to factory that will also wipe your data. Either way, when you once again enter your gmail sign-in details, it should soon re-populate your phone's contacts and begin keeping them in sync. I have only ever entered my sign-in details once, at the end of last year when I got my phone, in the Sprint store (weeks before I rooted, and over a month before I flashed a ROM). I don't even recall what the setup screen looked like, but it was there somewhere. Nothing I have done since has required me to do anything else to keep the phone in sync with google. What are you running into (how isn't it working) ? EDIT: On a side note, it's very easy (and worthwhile) to backup your gmail contacts from google's web interface. Look in the upper-right corner of the contacts window for 'Export'.

Do you have contacts stored online that you see if you manually log in to gmail? Those are the contacts that should sync with your phone. |

You should not have to do anything else. Just log in to gmail from your pc and you should see any contacts you have added on your phone, and visa versa. You can manually backup those contacts in csv form by using export from the gmail web interface (as I mentioned above). There are a few settings you can review on the phone under Settings > Data Synchronization > Google, but it's nothing fancy, and all on already by default. EDIT: When you add contacts on your phone, note that they will be listed in the form as 'Google' contacts by default, and will be included in the sync.
