Flashing to custom ROM = Hard Reset?

Ok, bear with me here as I've had Windows Mobile forever prior to getting my Hero. I've read all over trying to find this answer and I thought I found it at one point but it was a little while ago and I wasn't ready to root and flash and so forth. My question is: when you install a custom ROM on an android phone, does it hard reset your phone, or in other words does it wipe everything so you have to start over installing apps and such? I thought I read that it did NOT wipe everything but just want to be clear before I jump in. Thanks in advance for your help and sorry if I missed this somewhere in the forums.

It does not wipe your phone. If you rooted your phone then do a backup just in case.

Sweet! So I can do the auto-rooter thing in the Fresh Pre-Kitchen and then flash to the Fresh ROM and all of my applications and settings should still be there...correct?

Wow...just one more reason why Android is better than Windows Mobile =D>

I was curious about one thing myself. If i do a hard reset, does it clear out the memory card too?

It should I did not have any issue when I first flashed it. Flip removed certain stock apps which you need to install after the flash.

No it will not. You can do that from settings SD&Phone Storage, unmount, format. But don't do it without backing up unless you have nothing on there you want.
