Standard android keyboard on Hero?

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone has gotten the standard android keyboard installed onto their Heroes. I know the HTC keyboard is awesome, but I also like the standard keyboard and I love to have options. I have tried using adb to push the apk (and even tried pushing the apk and odex) to /system/app, and it works. I even "ls" /system/app, and it shows up in there. But on the phone it appears to not even be installed. I have also tried even uninstalling the htc keyboard (apk and odex) and then installing the LatinIME.apk, but that doesnt work either (I end up just not having a keyboard lol). So if anyone has any insight on why it might be blocked, or if anyone has done this, I would very much appreciate your help. Thanks
