Try a hard reset also check your timeout settings under display.

the time out settings are the same as they have always been. I did a hard reset by mashing the up, down, and power buttons. it did reset, but still will not let me use the power button otherwise.

Does the power button feel like it's sticking or not working properly? might be some dirt of something stuck in there, if it was me I would try to blow some compressed air in it while pushing on the power button, and if that didn't work I would power the phone off and take the battery out and try to use some rubbing alcohol and clean that area while working the button, and lastly if that didn't work I would get it replaced.
