Any reason apps are different size if moved to SD?

I've always been curious why apps are different size once they are moved to the SD card? For example, Skype (v1.0.0.983) states that it is 8.41MB total on the phone, but once you move it to SD card, it is only 696Kb? Is 696Kb remain on the phone, while the rest is on the SD card?

The majority goes to the SD card however some of the app is still on the phone. It varies a lot to for diffrent apps. Some apps will only leave a few KB's and others will leave MB's.
