My noob Gingerbread Sense 3.0 review
Just to update you guys, I flashed VirusRom Kingdom Revolution beta (not the leak).....lemme just say for a beta port.......SWEET!. Though it is a memory hog (after a restart, I had a paltry 48mb of RAM left), it runs way smoother than I thought it would. And it installed as easily as any other Rom for me (make sure to follow the instructions to a T, especially if you are on a newer EVO).
We can blame the memory usage on the new Sense 3.0. Like I mentioned earlier, I was hard pressed to do anything after a titanium restore for my previous apps because my device merely has 512mb of RAM opposed to the Sensation's whopper 1gb.
New Sense has many fail safes, one of which I have never seen mentioned before. I had a persistent prompt (every 5 mins even after deleted all I could bear) telling me I had low memory and gave me options to delete apps or cache data. After you go through that, it then allows you to delete text messages and emails to free up more memory.
Another porting issue I ran into was the visualizations. The most prevalent was the new Sense Weather 3.0. The stunning visuals almost damn right killed my poor adreno 205. I ran into rendering issues and so forth. Even the new lockscreen gave me issues.
On the bright side, the screen looked fantastic as all the colors are nice and crisp. Made me not recognize my failing Epson screen for a second. I can only imagine this Rom paired up with the new HTC screens.
There are way more new features that HTC included but given my fear of putting my EVO through that fiasco again I held off. I'm not going to touch upon the new pull down drawer as that has been extensively covered already.
4G, 3G, cams, WiFi and mms all work as expected. Battery life is still horrendous but might be worth the eye candy once the bugs are sorted out. The one significant thing that I noticed that didn't work (not including HTC hub and sync) was the screen brightness control. Screen chugged along at 100% brightness to further the battery drain issue.
Final verdict? Tons of potential? Oh yeah! Once out of beta, will it prevent me from ditching my EVO? Probably. Everyday use? I would say yes (even now) if the screen brightness issue and Sense rendering issues don't phase you. My #1 thing against this beta Rom is the size: the zip size was approaching the 400mb mark. I am confident the rendering issues will be sorted out. I would just love to see a smaller footprint for the Rom. For now I'm going to run back to Virus's infection Rom.
Then Sense 3.0 visuals to brag about for all! If you want to try the Rom out, check out my Rom page sticky under upgrades. Post your thoughts, whether you agree with me or not, or just say hi.
Thanks guys
