I saw something like this a really long time ago when converting from a... I think a Motorola i95 to a PPC 6600 (I think, could be off with the numbers).

Anyway, the ultimate solution was for sprint to remove and re-add the picture mail option to my phone number. Apparently it forced the picturemail system to start sending notifications (and actual content) in the correct format for the phone listed to my account.

This was years ago, but I remember this specific issue because I was mad that my girlfriend's crappy phone sent and received pictures flawlessly, but I had to click a link to open a website.

I'm going to guess it's sprint. When I rooted the hero and put non-sense cm6 on there, it would get a text to check voice mail cause visual mail was gone and sprint was stil sending visual mail to the phone. I would guess when they swapped your service over from the last phone there was a hickup and it needs to be reset. Call sprint and tell them to reset your account and see if that clears it up.
