Rooting with Unrevoked clear as mud

First you had to understand differences between Unrevoked3 and Unrevoked Forever.

Turns out Unrevoked3 includes Unrevoked Forever.

Unrevoked Forever is what does S-OFF (which basically opens you up to any mod any time).

Then I went to follow procedure (take your pick of the 100's) and the USB Drivers would not install on Windows 7 64bit. I ended up installing PdaNet 64bit to solve that.

Then I ran Unrevoked and it failed, saying too new.

So for grins, I tried again and it worked.

Then I had SuperUser but it kept prompting each time even though I said Remember. I ignored that for now.

Installed Titanuim Backup and it completely failed to run.

There is some known problems that Fix_Permissions is required. That was not installed by unrevoked. Not sure if this may have been red herring. And permmissions was already done or not.

Installed Terminal emulator to run Fix_Permissions. No where to be found.

Downloaded Fix_Permissions script and it would not run on SDCARD even with correct permissions.

Installed Rom Manager and Fix_Permissions also failed because the script was not installed.

Bought Root Explorer so I could make \system writeable so I could copy fix_permissions script to \system\bin.

fix_permissions would still not run because no BusyBox is installed. Found that in the "Manual" Root kit in sticky thread here. Then Ran Fix_Permissions and it ran but got lots of "cut" errors. Not sure what that means or if it's a problem.

Back to Titanium Backup it's working differently but now stuck in SU prompt loop.

Ran Super User manually to check version and is said a binary was out of date. I did that update and applications no longer prompt each time.

Titanium Backup now actually works.

What a freaken mess.

Unrevoked only does about 3/4 of the Job. Not sure if the "Not Supported" on new EVO's warning in sticky is related to some of the issues I stumbled on. My Version of firmware and hardware was listed as compatible with Unrevoked3.

If I flashed a custom ROM (which I have not done yet) the Custom ROM may have avoided some of these issues.

Geesh that was fun. One Click - Yeah right.

Come again? I had that working before fine.

But I wanted full root.

I think I was one of the rare ones that didn't immediately flash a custom ROM after rooting which puts latest SU and BusyBox on.

Re: Rooting with Unrevoked clear as mud

download BusyBox Installer from the market, use it to install BusyBox 1.18...

download RomManager, tell it to install recovery, then tell it to instal alternate recovery...

You can then click FIX PERMISSIONS in Rom Manager...

You can now also boot into recovery (hold down the DOWN arrow as you turn on phone), select recovery, then choose OTHERS, then FIX UIK

there are two alternate methods to fix the permissions...I recommend doing both, just to be safe.

You might have multiple copies of BusyBox installed, this could cause the repeated requests to allow root.

To check, use Root Explorer to SEARCH your phone for Busybox, if you see more than one, delete all of them, then re-open busybox installer and re-install busybox 1.18. REBOOT your phone....

check if the problems are gone.

If you read my post I did fix all the problems. It's just a warning to folks saying reading "It's a breeze just 1-click and you are done".

Part of the issue was my not flashing a current ROM designed for being rooted. I have flashed sprint lovers since which has most everything up to date. I'm just surprized Unrevoked was incomplete where it did most of the hard stuff correctly.

Re: Rooting with Unrevoked clear as mud

How did you get to S = off?

I am rooting my third phone. Two went fine but the 3rd cannot seem to get S = Off. I ran UnRevoked and flashed Azreal but I am unable to flash Pri1.90
Recovery acts real weird. Keeps telling me the Back Button is disabled. This phone has the old .76 boot loader and came with EClair installed!! (just came today) as a replacement phone.

Re: Rooting with Unrevoked clear as mud

I just ran UnRevoked forever and it flipped the Signature checker. I hade run UnRevoked 3 times and it always said Success but never did the deed. Maybe it is broken
