It depends on what your intent is for a "jailbroken" device.

If your intent is to pirate software, it is possible to do this without being "jailbroken."
If your intent is to use your android device on a different carrier, it is not necessary to "jailbreak" your android device.
If your intent is to use a customized rom, then "jailbreaking" your device will be necessary.
If your intent is to customize or use themes on your device, beyond what your carrier intended, then yes, you will need to "jailbreak" your device.

My advice is to not "jailbreak" your device, just because your friends have "jailbroken" their devices.

My other advice is to read the FAQ, and the other "stickied" topics in the EVO 4G forum, and other forums that you visit.

Do you know what "Jailbreaking" means?

The closest thing to "Jailbreaking" the EVO 4G is "Rooting" your phone.

Re: Evo 4g jailbroken?

There are things that you might like to Root is for. "Rooting" is the EVO 4G thing to do.

You can get a free Wifi Hotspot with a rooted EVO 4G.

You can get rid of annoying programs that you don't need to want, such as Sprint Football, Sprint Navigation, etc...

You can get rid of FM Radio app.. (despite the desperate desire of TP2 users to have this on their devices)

You can do many other cool things. The free Hotspot alone is a nice one if you want to impress your iphone friends.

I happen to like the FM radio app. It has served it's purpose. My wifes car radio went to crap but the tape deck (yes, I said tape deck), still works and with a cassette adapter, she can now listen to her flippin crappy country music again....ugh!!!! Trying to get her to listen to something more....hip, like All That Remains or Panic Cell, but she just rolls her eyes and calls me evil.....

Re: Evo 4g jailbroken?

I use my FM radio app all the time in at my desk at work. Rooting is great though to get rid of the bloatware. Glad to have the Blockbuster app gone. Now if Netflix had an app that would allow me to stream movies on my Evo, that would be great.

Re: Evo 4g jailbroken?

Jailbreak sounds silly enough to stop me from ever buying an iPhone.

Re: Evo 4g jailbroken?

I understand that some might like the FM radio app, I just find it silly that people are so desperate to get it to work on the TP2, even now that it is an outdated phone. There are outdated phones that have an FM transmitter built in, that might be more useful.

I personally listen to KFI AM640 most of the time....
