Because, just like any other app, the market gets closed when CPU is needed, so it's not always around to check. I have 157 apps, so its just become habit for me to check a couple of times a day.

You have to be connected to Google Service to check for updates...otherwise they don't want people complaining the market is using data in the background. But they probably should include an option to check for updates once every x amount of time

not necessarily. When you use native apps2sd, there is still data stored on the phone. What gets moved to the sdcard is something called an APEX file which is just meat from the app. That is why devs have to enable it in their apps instead of it just working like the apps2sd hack from the hero or g1.
