Handcent and stock sms app running at the same time?

Anyone else who runs handcent notice that the stock app seems to be running in the background as well? For instance it displays my new message twice, once in handcent and once in the stock app on the ticker at the top. It also beeps twice.

Is there a way to turn off the stock app completely? It seems to be slowing my phone down to a slug. Especially after I have several thousand texts stored that I never went and deleted....

Go into the stock messaging app , press menu and go to settings...disable the notifications.

That should be it.

why does the stock app have to be running at all if handcent is a direct replacement? I want to make my phone faster and it feels like this is slowing it down...

Handcent is not a "direct replacement" it is just an alternate program to use for text messaging. I use it and I havent noticed any slowing down, you just have to disable notifications for the stock app like said before.

Also disable auto receive in the stock app.
