Screen dimming annoyance

My Evo has an annoying problem, primarily in the browser, where the screen will dim, and the status line at the top will momentarily re-appear. I've also had it happen when I'm composing an email, and every time it does, it causes the keyboard to disappear.

Is this because I have a setting wrong, or is there a problem with my particular device? I've searched the forums for "dim" and didn't find anyone else complaining about this, and my son's Evo doesn't do it either.

Re: Screen dimming annoyance

this may be due to the proximity sensor? especially if you're holding the phone in landscape. your palms might kind of cover the sensor and it will dim it self. not sure about your status bar however.

Just to make sure check the ROM forum where you got that rom (if one is flashed) and see if it's a known issue.

Re: Screen dimming annoyance

i do have a problem very similar to urs when i hold the phone in landscape. HTC put the sensor in the wrong spot, in my opinion.

Hmm. I'm pretty sure it's not the prox sensor- this is during browsing, not phone use, and it will do this regardless of what orientation I hold it in. I'm also using the stock ROM - I haven't rooted it yet.
