Over seas question

So, next friday, my gf & I are going to germany/amsterdam & i was wondering if google maps & navigation would work over seas? I know we wont get cell reception, but would GPS work? I was planning on turning everything off except wifi & maybe GPS. not sure if it would work or if I would get charged.
thx!

Re: Over seas question

Gps will work but the problem is that the maps aren't saved anywhere so they will need to be downloaded on the fly. You will need a constant data connection. Now sprintnav and googlenav works perfectly fine for me but I am sure there are other gps alternative that you can save the maps to the sd card so you won't need a data connection.

Re: Over seas question

I believe garmin or tom tom has an android app. But either way, you need a data connection. If you have a gps unit, its better to update the map for that; no data required

Re: Over seas question

You don't need a data connection for on board GPS, who told you this? You download the map to you SD card (as well as downloading any points-of-interest, traffic cams points, etc if not already included in map), and then your set. Over the years, the only time I needed active data for on board GPS was when I was using GarminXT's Google Search function (WinMobile), and even then I didn't "need" it, I just wanted to use it, lol!

And Garmin doesn't have an Android app, unless something has changed since June 4th of this year.

Edit: I think you are referring to aGPS. Yes, that requires data, but is not necessary for normal GPS functions. It's like an icing on the cake kind of thing. Useful, sure, but not necessary.
