Does wifi really save battery life?

did a quick search and couldnt find any dedicated threads on this.. if i over looked it please merge or delete.......

ive seen a lot of blurbs here and there about using wifi over 4g/3g and how some people are experiencing better battery life. would there be any one that could verify or disprove this?

Re: Does wifi really save battery life?

I have an airrave at home also but I get great reception around town also. My battery lasts twice as long at home over wifi than on the road with 3g. I have no stats to back it up but this is my personal experience.

Re: Does wifi really save battery life?

I'm on work and home wifi networks probably 75% of the time and my battery lasts 36+ hours with light to moderate use.

When I'm on 3G, battery doesn't last 24 hours.

Re: Does wifi really save battery life?

Yes WIFI saves battery, but it really comes down to signal strength.

BTW, Airave does not (currently) support 3G.

At my work I have both WIFI and Sprint repeaters (repeaters installed by Sprint in our buildings to boost signal strength (including EV-DO r.a)) So I get everything full strength (well since the WIFI antenna is directly outside my office and the Sprint antenna is a few floors down, WIFI is stronger.) I realize no difference in battery drain between WIFI and 3G. At home, my 3G signal is not as strong and I can see a difference (using WIFI improves my battery life at home by about 40%).

Now 4G is a different story all together. I do have 4G service, it is strong outside (outdoors) both my work and my home, but inside my home it is weak and inside my office it is zero. Turning on 4G drains the battery quickly.

That`s exactly what I`ve been getting out of my battery. Took the words right out of my mouth
