I have never rooted....not really sure why I would want to...what does it give me?

I just tapped on menu -> settings -> System updates -> HTC software update.

I just tapped on menu -> settings -> System updates -> HTC software update.

Rooting gives the ability to run a lot of software you can't otherwise run, including free wifi tether, change ROM's, etc.
