"My Contacts" vs. "All Contacts"

On my old Windows Mobile phones (HTC Touch and HTC Touch Pro2) when I synced my contacts with Google I only got those listed under "My Contacts." Now that I've switched to Android on the HTC Evo, all of my contacts from GMail are showing up. Is there any way to just sync some of them? I don't need 1000 people cluttering up my phone book. The only thing I can see to do is go to People>Menu>View and check "Only contacts with phone numbers" and uncheck "Show auto Gmail contacts" but that still gives me more people than I want.
