High latency

I typically have high latency (~400ms) when surfing the web in 3G or 4G.

Is this typical? Are there any setting I can tweak to try to improve it?

Re: High latency

Thats normal latency for 3G/4G...nothing much you can do about it...most of the time the servers you connect to are in mid west area...don't understand but thats how they have it setup. I wouldn't really worry about the latency if your just surfing the web...or downloading a small file...everything should be fine.

Re: High latency

I suspect that latency will be typical of any long range wireless. I havn't seen this topic talked about much, esp when it comes to 4g.
someday there will be 4g near me.

Re: High latency

Yeah...your connecting to a tower than can be up to 3 to 5 miles away...on CDMA towers they are capable of going as far as 30 to 45miles on flat ground (no hills)...so you have to factor in how far you are from the tower...where the tower is transmitting too...and so on...most if not all around you go somewhere else in the US to central hub...for instance if I was to do a speed test on my phone.....or a Evo 4G for that matter...the server it would default to is somewhere in the mid west...so yeah my tower is 1/4 down the street...but the server its going to is way far away...hence the latancy.

Re: High latency

At my house, a dedicated 3G data card connected to a 4' antenna on the roof pointed at a tower less than a mile away can't manage a ping under 150 ms.

It's just the nature of wireless.

Re: High latency

It's not like how your home internet ISP works...since 9/10 your local hub is within miles of where you live...so the latency would not be a issue. It goes like this for a cell tower 3G/4G connection (Your Phone ---> Tower ----> Hub. The tower is x miles away from your house...from the Tower the signal may be pushed half way across the US to a central hub they have...then from there it goes out to the internet....in return giving you a higher latency rate....Do a speed test on your Evo...and I'm betting you the location it gives you on the Speedtest.net app...is a server no where near you....

It will connect to the closest server possible to the hub...

Re: High latency

Using evo as hotspot in a town so small they could only put in 1 stop light, sprint don't show it on their coverage map, and god forgot about it.
