i did part 1 and 2 of the tutorial sticked above. then went and did this:

doing those things, you end up w/ a stock rom, fully rooted, and 1.47 ota installed with everything working.

then just need to install the free wifi tethering app, or titanium backup to remove apps (sprint nfl/nascar, etc)

yes, you'll still have your purchased apps show up. you can always d'l astro file manager and use its 'app manager' tool to backup your apps before you root. it backs up most things but not all.
