Unhappy video out via HDMI is lackluster

why does the 720p video i recorded on my evo look so grainy on my 1080p tv. i can see all the reds and greens in the playback on my tv. 720p video from other sources never looks that bad on my tv. seems like HTC throttled it or something. can this be fixed thru the kernel? or some type of hack?

Re: video out via HDMI is lackluster

it is probably caused from the sensor in the camera, what was the lighting like when you were shooting the video? In lower light conditions I would imagine that the sensor would make alot of noise.. Also given the power of the device there will probably be a bit of artifacting.. I do not think any kernel tweaking will fix this as its a limitation of the hardware. Hope this helps!

Cheers!

Re: video out via HDMI is lackluster

the issue is the type of encoding that the phone uses. it only uses hq263

Re: video out via HDMI is lackluster

Is your hdmi playback set to auto, 480 or 720?

Re: video out via HDMI is lackluster

Yeah the update will come with EVO 2.. What what in the butt! Not all is perfect when things are new. I mean the 720p is pretty new for phones. Evo 2 will have a better camera and a better 720p out.. either that or it will have crappy 1080p out that works as good as the current 720p except that its freaking 1080p OMG SO AMAZING lol. Sorry for the sarcasum but seriously this will more then likley be fixed when we get the next gen evo ro whatevers hot coming out replacing the evo on sprint.

Re: video out via HDMI is lackluster

I've known from the beginning that these features would be mid class....you do have to realize how much is stuffed into that phone...I'm actually suprised with what it can do. I don't really think we will have to wait for the Evo 2 for improvements to happen...the Video capture will be addressed, the HDMI will probably get a update...and remember Froyo 2.2 is right around the corner...so we should see some vast improvments.

Are the options for H.263 and mpeg4 just variants of H.263? I am running (mostly) stock Rom and it gives me the option of H.263 or MPEG4 encoding for video at 720p.

Also, in reply to OP, you have to consider that this isn't meant to replace your video camera. I have yet to see any device (and I could easily be wrong here) that records video, high def or standard def, as well as a dedicated camcorder. In good light the EVO's video is what I expect it to be. I haven't hooked it up to my TV but playback on my computer is acceptable. Maybe the iPhone 4 does better but I'd have to see a side by side comparison with video shot from both phones at the same time to say which is better.
