Is my EVO Defective?

I am having issues with the data connection on my EVO timing out during downloads both from the we browser and from the market. At times I am unable to get the data connection to resume for some time. I am quite certain it is not my service because I am in the same area that I was in when I had my TP2 and I never had data time out issues. Does anyone have any suggestions? Has anyone seen this?

My wife had a similar problem on her phone. I just powered it down and turned it back on and it fixed it. She is rooted an currently running OMJ 1.5. She does not have the 1.47.651.1 updates.

What have you done to your phone? Root/custom rom/OTA

You may also want to try going into the Device Self Service app and running "Update Profile" to make sure your phone is properly data provisioned and "Update PRL" to make sure you have the most up-to-date list of towers for your area. I've done that in the past (the Update Profile especially) when having data connection issues and it usually resolves it.

I am rooted and I have not done the mose recent OTA update, though I did update the radio to 1.39.00. The issue exist no matter what ROM I am on. So far I have tried: Baked Snack, Fresh, Rooted Stock, and EvoX (2.2). It is very weird because I only seem to lose the connection when downloading from the market or browser. However, if I am just browsing (web, tapatalk, maps) I don't lose connection, but, once I have lost the connection none of the aforementioned programs will reestablish the data connection.

I have gone through and updated the profile and PRL and sometimes it helps for about five minutes but then the issue resurfaces, other times it does not help at all.

I am debating rather or not I should exchange my phone through Radio Shack, but I would rather see if there is some other solution available.

Have you tried the newest radio (2.00)? Are you rooted?

Edit: A little coincidental that we are both having this issue and we are both in Denver. Though I still think it is a phone issue and not a service issue.

Hum, my suggestion is to go to local stores that have demo units and test their connections by downloading stuff to them from the market. that way you can see if it is a phone, network issue or if it's because of your customization compared to a stock phone..

Re: Is my EVO Defective?

I am currently in Denver too and am seeing a similar issue. When I tether either by usb or wifi, I can download 2MB total and the connection freezes. I haven't been able to measure this on the market or other data transfers but I think it is probably hitting 2MB and freezing on any type of transfer. Maybe there is something funny going on in Denver.

OK, this is a little different than the problem my wife was having.
I had this issue on my phone. I'm using the only rom you didn't mention (OMJ's).
Here's what caused the issue for me...

(Sorry this is so wordy)
I've been on OMJ's rom's since he started. I've flashed others, but keep going back to OMJ. I recently installed OMJ1.6r which included 1.47.651.1 updates and the new 2.05 radio.
After I installed it, I restored my data.img file so that all my settings and apps would be back. After doing that, I noticed that I couldn't use the market. Everything else worked fine, but apps would not download. I tried flashing another rom, the market worked. Then I restored my data.img file and the market broke again. So, I'm not sure what I had in the data.img file, but that file was breaking the market.
Yesterday I reinstalled OMJ1.6r and went through the trouble of setting everything up again. Installed all the apps I wanted and changed all the settings. Then I made a backup.
Last night I was working on the video for the OTA root method so I flashed to stock, did the OTA and re-rooted. After everything was done, I flashed OMJ1.6r and restored my latest version of the data.img file and I have no issues w/ the Market.

Good call, I will go into a store hopefully sometime today to see if this is in fact a network issue.

Now a recent thread title comes to mind: "Sprint to start throttling data connections this summer" I sure hope this isn't the case.
