Why do you even care if your in 1x or 3G? 1x is old technology...maybe Sprint/HTC decided to go without the indicator on the phone since it's old...mine as well have it say 3G since that is the basic standard for Wireless Phones these days. Either way...your speed will differ everywhere you go these days.

The reason I care is if if I'm actually getting 1X in an area, I can budget my use accordingly instead of waiting to see how long something takes to pull down. Since you actually could be in a 1X situation, it would be helpful to have an idicator on the phone.

I've had this question as well. I guess nobody really has an answer. I've seen screen shots of phones that have the evdo icon. Wonder how that happens.

I've only seen the 1X icon when using 2 roms:

CM6
MIUI

When I was unrooted, I only saw 3G/4G. Even on my stock rooted roms (1.47, and now the 2.2 update), I have never seen 1X, even when sending/receiving texts, and when I'm in areas where my fiancee's Hero shows 1X.

To me, it's a non issue. If things are going downloading really slow, I just stop, and wait until I'm in an area with better signal.

Some of the custom roms based off the HTC Desire HD and Incredible ports showed EVDO and 1X as well as 3G, was kinda cool..
