I had this problem as well. I even uninstalled and reinstalled 3 times! lol. But this is what I did and now it works great...

I hooked the evo up as disk drive and installed the HTC sync app from the phone which installs drivers to PC and the phone itself. Once installed, I changed connection type to HTC sync. At this point it still won't connect for me but as soon as I go into settings and select "connect to PC", It connects. You must tell the software to use outlook and not google as sync type. This method worked for me and hope it works for you too!

Welcome man!!! Glad it worked for ya!!!! The EVO is a great phone. I went from winmo to the palm pre to android and I'm lovin it. Best phone I have ever owned.
