Headphone audio too loud.

This may be a strange question, but is there anyway to lower the audio when connected to a pair of headphones? I like to listen to music when going to bed. I currently have the media volume set to one "notch" before mute, and the volume on the headset is waaaaaaaaay too loud. I am thinking about getting a pair of headphones that have a volume control, but if this can be done without paying for anything, I'd rather go that route.
