No, shouldn't need to, though you will need to enable debugging mode. Since you're not doing anything requiring super-user permissions, non-root should work fine.

The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

and in the text file it says:
adb server is out of date. killing...

i have to disconnect the phone and then reconnect it to get it to recognize. i say "charge only mode" and then about 10 sec later it disconnects its self. same out come on my laptop and desktop...

Are you using the stock data cable or a generic one?

0003 epson, the emeulator was the easiest way for those who are unsure what your looking for either:

Really??? All these steps to find out??? Isn't easier to just check the under hardware version on the phone???
