Nand Back-up

Ok i see a lot different root threads all over the web for the Evo some do nand back-up some don't

what i really wanna know is what purpose does a nand back-up serve
what does it back up exactly?
how is it useful?
what can i do with it?
what kinda trouble might i face if i don't have one?
And if i do one should i save a copy on my puter? "does it corrupt easily"

It backs up your current rom so if something goes wrong you can restore it using recovery.

ok so why make a backup of the stock rom on a rooted phone when stock roms dont like rooting?
shouldnt you wait tell you flash a custom rom then make the nand back up?
