there is a difference between the white and black EVO.

the black has a rubbery finish on the back side, while the white is a plastic type finish. depending on how you like the feel in your hand, i think i would side with a rubbery finish because of the grip. but everyone has their own preference.

but why not make the whole phone white rather then two tone or three toning it up (including the red)? I don't get sprint sometimes

Think about any electronic equipment that is white. In a few weeks it will be tan.
