To root or not to root ... that is the question

I am picking up my EVO today and am pretty excited. Actually it is a Fathers Day present. Anyway I am familiar with installing custom ROMs on my Apache , yes moving on ...... should I let Best Buy install the update and wait until some further development has been done on ROMs or not and I root to gain more control? I would like to get all the bloatware off and add a few apps and this would only be possible if I root. So what is a person to do ..........

Re: To root or not to root ... that is the question

kind of up to you, do you want free wifi tethering? Do you want to be stuck with their idea of what the phone should look like and can do?
If you answer yes to either of those i would root, mine was rooted before i opened my radioshack launch day (im a manager)

It is very simple to root the phone I see no reason not to, you can still do all the same things with a rooted phone as a non. So go for it have some fun.

Re: To root or not to root ... that is the question

If you plan on purchasing copyrighted programs (NBA, MLB atBat, etc..) use the unrevoked method. Toasts method breaks the marketplace for those apps.

Root. Definitely... then be sure to use the wifi tethering if for no other reason than the fact that you CAN tether... that will pay for your $10/month premium data fee, and save you $20/month in the process! Also, then you can remove/install anything you want.

Re: To root or not to root ... that is the question

Incorrect. You can root just fine using the Toast method CLEARLY documented in the stickied posts at the top of the forum.

Re: To root or not to root ... that is the question

I dunno which OTA update you guys are talking about, but I had an OTA update applied on my phone the day I received it, and was still able to root using the unrevoked method.

Anyway, I would HIGHLY recommend rooting the phone, and flashing a custom ROM. I'm using Fresh 0.3 right now, and the crashing issues I had are completely gone, and my battery life has GREATLY improved.

Here's the tutorial I used... Very easy to follow, even if it has a lot of steps.
