Linked Contacts?

OK, I am not sure what I did. I have contacts in google. I sync'd my phone with HTCsync and outlook. Most of my contacts show linked. Not sure what that means...but ok. If I unlink them I get double copies...one on the phone, one in google. I deleted the one on my phone, show it shows only the google one, and shows unlinked.

Is that correct? Should I delete all of the "PHONE" versions of my contacts after unlinking them from google?

I think this happend because I used HTCsync and sync'd wit outlook and google. Correct? If so, why did I not end up with duplicates in google?

Is there a linking tutorial around here?
