Gmail reseiving twice, why?

The only advantage I've found with the gmail app is that it gives you full access to your entire gmail history, so searching six years of email is fast and easy. Whereas the exchange gmail only replicates a set history. One other minor benefit to the gmail app is that it is easier (fewer steps) to delete mail.

Is there an easy way to set the gmail app to STOP receiving and only do it manually ?
