Re: USB tether
short answer is for both pda net and easy tether yes there is a desktop install needed both can be downloaded from the market. So steps needed download from market to phone download from developer site for desktop side install on both start ap on phone from sytray on pc side click on the icon to connect. This is for both the usb apps. Both function the same I think easy tether is a little faster and cheaper. Both will work after the trial period but neither one will connect to secured sites after trial without full license.

Re: USB tether
To USB tether the EVO do you have to pay the $30/month wifi subscription or can you USB tether as part of the regular unlimited data package for the phone without the additional cost? Thanks.

Re: USB tether
To the OP:
I'm using EasyTether to connect via USB right now. I am on a Windows 7 64 bit laptop and it works great. I tried PDANet but was unsuccessful, since I cannot get HTC Sync to connect (but that's another story). I downloaded the EasyTether app from the Marketplace, downloaded the drivers from EasyTether's website. Then I connected my Evo and set it as "Disk Drive" from the pop-up menu and the laptop installed all the necessary drivers. To establish a connection, I connect the Evo to my laptop via USB, select the "Disk Drive" option from the menu and then double-click on the EasyTether icon in the taskbar. It shows a message reading "Connection Established. Using ADB transport". Below are my SpeedTest results for EasyTether: Edit: I just dl'ed and installed the latest version of HTC Sync (2.0.40). I was finally able to partially sync my contacts w/ Outlook 2007, but even better is that PDANet was finally able to connect. This has been discussed many times, even in this very thread. To answer your question, the built-in USB tether does not work UNLESS you pay for the WIFI Hotspot plan through Sprint. You have to use either PDANet or EasyTether right now. EasyTether is cheaper and very easy to set up and is just as fast as PDANet (for me anyway).
