Do I HAVE TO ROOT?
I am a complete android noob, wm for 6 years. If I want to install apk's on my EVO not downloaded from the market do I need to root? Also can I install the programs to my sd card and launch them or do I have to root the evo?

You only need root if the application you want to run needs it...

No ROOT is completely optional just allowing you to remove unwanted programs and even flash different rom's. And you can copy the apk to the storage card and run it via a file manager like Astro and it will install whether you are rooted or not, but at present without root you will only be able to install to internal memory.
