There used to be a time when you once had to wait 30 days but since Sprint did away with the mail in refunds that has gone away. What they will do is they will have to activate the new device on the eligible line then turn around and activate it on the line you want it on. That's what they did to me when I had it done.

I have always just ordered the phone, had it shipped to me and then activated it on the line I wanted it on. Never had a problem.

well sanmanc is right, but in the day, they would verify the new phone was on the line that was eligible for the upgrade. If it didn't match, they would deny the rebate.
Nowadays it's accepted, I've been told it's called an "alternate upgrade"
