Bluetooth SMS message access

I have a Kenwood DNX9960 in my truck. It has the ability to access SMS thru bluetooth and read them out loud as well as let me reply thru the headunit. The EVO 3D has message access thru bluetooth, but I can't get it to work for the life of me. Everything else works over bluetooth with my 9960, but the SMS button is greyed out. I have SMS turned on in the bluetooth settings on both the phone and the headunit.

I'm not expecting an answer just for the 3D and the Kenwood 9960. Anyone try it with an OEM or another aftermarket headunit with the capability of accessing messages over bluetooth?
