Actually it may not effect the 3D release date at all. There is no indications either way that the 3D will be unlocked or that they will unlock it at a future time. One could easily conclude from the posting that phones coming out after the 3D is released will be unlocked but the people who bought any HTC phone that was locked such as the 3D and prior will remain locked.

I could say I will no longer ship fruitcake to family members. That in no way indicates that I will attempt to warn people about or intercept any fruitcake I've already shipped.

I bet Evo 3D will be unlocked, or have an update to unlock. A lot of this upset was over people wanting the 3D and saying they'd go to Samsung instead. It'd only be half listening to customers to not touch 3D and only affect the ones going forward. And the email encourages and reinforces what it seems like to me.
