[How to] Guide to S-off, Recovery & ROOT

1 Attachment(s)
Here's a quick quide to installing the S-off tool, flashing the custom recovery & root :) *FOR HBOOT 1.30 & 1.40 ONLY!!!*

*NOTE* if you do not have SDK installed, extract these files to a folder (ie, c:sdktools)

Installing S-off

-download & install the fastboot drivers
-download the S-off tool
*NOTE* you'll need your HTC serial # (adb devices)
Code:

c:SDKtools>adb devices
List of devices attached
HT16JHX*****    recovery

-you will need this serial # to generate a beta key, select your hboot version (boot into bootloader to see your version...to get into bootloader: with phone off, hold down vol down, hit the power button)

http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/attachment...ot-betakey.jpg

-extract the contents of revolutionary-0.3pre6.zip to a folder
-attach your USB cable to phone, run revolutionary.exe, once it finds your phone, it will start the magic :)
-it will boot u into fastboot numerous times, this is normal
-once it finishes, do NOT install clockwork, ppl are having issues w/ it

Flashing the Recovery

-download PG86IMG-twrp-shooter-2.1.1.zip
-copy the .zip to the root of your sd card
-boot into bootloader without the usb cable connected (adb reboot bootloader)
-you may have to select the bootloader option
-it will scan your sd card, when it finds the PG86IMG, it will prompt you to install
-you now have a custom recovery :)
-reboot phone into Android, rename or delete the PG86IMG.zip (if u don't, it will try to install everytime u enter bootloader)

To get into Recovery

-using adb, type adb reboot recovery

OR

-power down phone, boot back into bootloader without the cable plugged in
-select the recovery option
-phone will boot into recovery, I strongly suggest doing a nandroid backup!

Flashing ROOT

-download ROOT
-from the recovery main menu, choose USB Storage Toggle, copy su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip to your SD card
-from the recovery main menu, choose "install zip", then "choose zip to flash", then select su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip

-you should now have ROOT!!!

Well, that was pretty easy. Does anyone know if it can be undone?

How long did you wait? For me, it did that 4 or so times and then said it gave the lemons back or something clever. If it's not working, the first thing I would check would be the drivers and make sure you aren't running HTC Sync when you try.

for those that may not have SDK installed, extract this zip to your C: (ie, c:\sdk\tools) and this is where u need to be to execute the fastboot command

OMJ,
After completing the steps...is it normal for Hands Free Activation to start up and I'm now getting a PRL Update?
Alos, I should note that I did get e reboot after exiting recovery...

bckoolaid 07-29-2011 10:57 PM

Re: Guide to S-off, Recovery & ROOT

Yes that is normal. Let it go through all of the updates or you will have to manually update your profile so data comes back.

Thanks guys...OMJ, I appreciate the work you put into the tutorial. Thanks for the help.

Would not recommend that until a developer cooks up a new rom w/that update in it because you might lose root.

Yes, a lot of people (including me) got the Hands Free Activation - Along with it forgetting my google password. Also, you may find that your voice does not work (For me it told me I was on Verizon Wireless). Call *2 from your phone and then hang up...Everything worked again...Well for me at least ;)

Re: Guide to S-off, Recovery & ROOT

Damn, this process was pretty damn easy. I still can't believe we finally got permanent root. Now its time to flash a rom, I guess it will have to be yours omj. Your rom was the first custom rom I ever flashed on the evo 4g so I guess I need to continue the process.....downloading now. On a side note I am really curious as to how these devs figured out this process, I am sure it will make one hell of an interesting read.

I downloaded this same version. It says everything is connected to my laptop, tethering is running, yet my laptop will not connect to any webpages. Any ideas?

*edit* Barnacle seems to work fine though

*edit* I had to check the "routing fix" checkbox for 3g. Seems to be working now

Hey does anyone know if it matters that I'm 1.40 and not 1.33? I've been at "method 3" for about 20 min. Somethings telling me I might be short!! I looked for an answer on XDA. seems to have happened to quite a few people (being on 1.40) but I didn't see any answers. Thanks in advance.
