I've successfully installed s-off.

My problem is that after powering off, holding the volume down button while pressing the power button does NOT boot into recovery. It just boots up normally...

Suggestions?

Uncheck the "Fastboot" options in settings under "Power" and try again.

Re: Guide to S-off, Recovery & ROOT

Please help. I have followed everything to a tee. I've even followed the video (except I didn't take clockwork recovery).

I have S Off and on 1.40. Got Error 16 when I 1st got S off but call to sprint fixed that.

But when I try to flash (PG86IMG-twrp-shooter-1.0.1) or (su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed), it says failed and aborted.

The only thing I haven't done is the SDK tools. I try that but get error msg on Pc saying no suitable Java found. I've tried to install jdk-7-windows-x64 and jre-7-windows-x64 but no luck.

I'm on a Vista on a 32 bit system tho and I just don't see the option for 32 bit anywhere.

Description on my E3D in recovery is weird.

I get Device with green arrows around it on black screen, then it changes to Red Triangle around android device.

I push Vol down and power but nothing happens. When I hur Vol up & power, it says I'm in Android system Recovery <3e> and I get 4 options.

Reboot system now
Apply update from sdcard
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition

I never get install from SD card.

I'm trying to avoid an unneeded factory reset if all possible.

Sorry for the long post but I tried to be as thorough as possible in my description for anyone who is willing to help

go back into hboot... where it says s-off... does it say revolutionary above that?

to get to hboot remove battery, replace, hold vol down then power.

if it does not say revolutionary then something didint go right... re run revolutionary...

Also rename the recovery (PG86IMG-twrp-shooter-1.0.1) to PG86IMG.zip when you put on sd card... exactly as I typed it... Make sure its in root of sdcad and just boot to hboot and it will ask you if you want to install....

You da Man!!

Some how I missed the part about rename the recovery so that worked.

Also, do I need to remove the original images from my card? I've got one that says (eng-PC36IMG.zip) dated 10/17/2010. Not sure if that was an original one from the E3D that i should remove or not.

I dont think you missed the part about rename... I think it may be absent from the tutorial.

Based on the name it sounds like a diff device. I would remove it.

Good luck and check out my ROMS!

I thought it wasn't just me and it was missing from the tutorial. But I didn't wanna be that guy that says he's perfect yet still look like an a$$ lol.

I've seen your name around here and heard good things. I will definately be checking yours, OMJ's and Fresh to name a few.

Please keep up the good work and the helpfulness is greatly appreciated.

I would at the very least rename PG86IMG.zip to something else or it will prompt u to install every time u go into bootloader.

eng-PC36IMG.zip, I believe that's from the OG EVO

Thanks OMJ. I did rename it. I tried bootloader and it tried to reinstall again. And yeah I figured I PC36 came when I transfered the contents on my SD card from my OG Evo.

Hey OMJ. Should everyone re-install TWRP with the updated zip or is the old 1.01 ok for now?

it's up to u.....I was getting an error when flashing the custom lockscreens, after updating to 1.0.3, no more error :)

here is their change logs:

Code:

2011-08-05 v1.0.3
new features:
- Added timezones that should cover everyone
- Added twrp spam feature (twrp settings)
- Added fix permissions (advanced menu)
- Added wipe cache and dalvik into Flash Zip menu
- Added copy recovery.log to /sdcard (advanced menu)
- Added output spam/no spam to restores
- Added mke2s prebuilt to /sbin
bug fixes:
- Fixed SD-EXT issues, (no partition SD-EXT features yet)
- Fixed EFS partition issues
- Changed the way we do backups on mtd devices, which should fix any boot partition issues
(we suggest making new backups if you have an mtd device, EVO4G,NS,NS4G)

2011-08-01 v1.0.2
bug fixes:
- Fixed SD-EXT issues
- Added Format SD-EXT into format menu
- Removed GAPPS support, CM7 automatically backsup and restores if you already have GAPPS installed. If you don't, just flash GAPPS zip
- Fixed issue where when flashing a rom, rebooting brings you back to recovery. Auto reboot after successful flash should work great now!
- Rearranged the format menu

Re: Guide to S-off, Recovery & ROOT

I stay up to date just to stay up to date. You may have no issue now but applied fixes exist for a reason. You may have the issue later on so I would do it.

My $.02

OMJ, your instruction looks simple and straight forward.

Why on the XDA forum the instruction are soo complicated?

Should I follow your instructions ??

I am going to root my 3D this weekend.

Re: Guide to S-off, Recovery & ROOT

So i flashed my evo 3d for the first time with s off recovery and root and it's working great! Was actually really easy. I was really nervous to do it at first (which is surprising because i flashed the hell out of my touch pro and touch pro 2) but i guess i didn't wanna risk screwing up since im not familar with android. I ran into a few issues but i fixed them and it's incredible. I'm thinking about flashing a new rom now.

Re: Guide to S-off, Recovery & ROOT

I got most of this done. I am having a problem at this step.
Flashing the Recovery

-download PG86IMG-twrp-shooter-1.0.1.zip
-copy the .zip to the root of your sd card
-boot into bootloader without the usb cable connected (adb reboot bootloader)
-you may have to select the bootloader option
-it will scan your sd card, when it finds the PG86IMG, it will prompt you to install
-you now have a custom recovery
-power down phone, boot back into bootloader without the cable plugged in
-select the recovery option
-phone will boot into recovery, I strongly suggest doing a nandroid backup!

I cannot select recovery. When I press volume down at that point it doesn't go down to recovery and keeps reinstalling the recovery zip.

Also how do I do a nandroid backup?

Edit: renamed zip file and it worked now
Edit: I achieved ROOT. As for the nandroid back up I just did option 1

Thanks.

You can't nandroid before root. That is a function of the recovery you flash in the process. Use MyBackup from the market to save stuff you want.
If you temp root, Titanium backup is good too. If you do temp root be sure to factory reset in the settings before rooting to clear out the temp root changes. If you don't you may have problems on the other side.

guessing this means I have to wait for a newer version?

Found your device: PG86100 (shooter-1.50.0000, Android: 2.3.4, ROM version: 2.08
.651.2)

Your device: shooter, with HBOOT 1.50.0000 is not supported at this time.
Press (almost) any key to exit.
