speed up htc eris

Hello all I'm a first time Droid user and I have a question . I know the Eris isn't the fastest phone on the market but is there a way to make it faster and will "rooting" the phone make it faster ? If so how do I go about doing that ? I don't wana mess it up ....lol . Ive also heard that it can't support the new 2.2 Android OS . if I root the phone is there a rooted 2.2 I can install ?
