Backup Active Sync Problems

I have loaded the software onto my computer but everytime I plug my Diamond into the USB connector I get no Active Sync program to launch. I want to back up all my contacts there so that I can update the ROM from HTC. Did I miss something when loading the software? How can I back up my device before starting to mess around with the ROM?
