I called the HB surf report recording. That way it is in constant connection while the readings are made. Any looping announcement site would work the same (e.g. weather report).

Re: Radios and Best Locations(36 Cities Listed!!!)
How did you measure signal/noise? I live in Irvine but also commute to Whittier everyday. The Telus and Verizon radio have been good to me, Sprint radios not as much (especially stock). The areas I am in in Whittier however, are much different than at home so it'd be useful to test with some real numbers.

Re: Radios and Best Locations(38 Cities Listed!!!)
Radio 1.03.03 is a VZW radio, just a FYI. (I think you got the sprint part from my stats.. I am on Sprint network.)

Re: Radios and Best Locations(38 Cities Listed!!!)
I have tried VZW, Telus, and Sprint 1.11.00F here in upstate NY in the capital district area (Albany, NY) and can say that I get best service with the Sprint radio. Verizon did very well with 1x but not as well with EVDO. Battery life seemed best with Sprint as well.
