why oh why CANT I STOP THE DATA CONNECTION?!?!?

at least twice a day, i notice my data connection is open and running for no apparent reason - arrows lit up. this is beyond hotmail/weatherpanel/whatever updating because it STAYS on for (yes i have timed it) at least 30 mins continuously AND even when i try to manually disconnect using the comm mgr, it just hangs in mid air for at least (yes i have timed it) 15 mins. i either have to turn off phone, soft reset, toggle airplane mode (IF i can get to the hanging comm mgr) or i've also found calling in to the phone will do the trick.

what is this??? again, even even with updating info, the connection should only stay alive for few mins right? not to mention that it shouldnt be hanging when trying to disconnect manually.

help!

sounds like either weather, pocket express, or activesync updating....

my RSS is on manual update, and i removed pocket express weeks ago via the add/remove programs. i have active sync set to manual, besides which i did a few tweaks mentioned here on ppc and it never starts or loads on startup anymore on its own.

weatherpanel is a different animal i fear: even tho the update arrows are not red (indicating updating??), i have seen posts either here or xda that found WP was the problem. i think the user had SPB wireless or something and it pointed to WP being the source of the mystery data connection...

Have you tried the long-press end key shortcut to end the data connection? I know this won't stop the auto-connecting but this might fix the problems with it locking up with comm manager.

Im not too sure as I just use the standard HTC Home Weather tab, and I have it to manually update. Cant you set up the weather panel to manually update as well?

yes, but since i only have it set to update once a day (or so), i would hope that it would "do its job" etc and not keep connection open.

the long press end key - when assigned to end data connection - works the same as going in to comm mgr and trying to turn off data: i.e. it still hangs in mid air as it's trying to shut off data.

Just so you know youre not crazy. I've had this problem with my mogul in the past as well as my TP... and my mogul was bone stock (no exchange server set up, email NEVER updating on its own, no weather programs). The worst part was if I didnt catch it and soft reset my phone my battery would be almost dead within about 45 minutes...
