Windows media help

On my desktop I am able to play streaming media files that start like this MM://85....etc etc which plays ok but when I try it on my Diamond in Windows Media Player all it does "connecting" and nothing happens. Is there maybe a plugin I need to install or maybe another media player is capable of streaming media files.
