I really don't get what you guys are doing to your batteries.

I've got two email accounts, both set to check on 30 minutes, I've sent about 25 texts today, and about 30 minutes worth of phone calls. I'm still at 76% battery, the phone has been off the charger since 730 this morning and it's now 2.

How people are claiming they do nothing on the phone and it doesn't get through the day is just crazy to me. Hell, last weekend I was in a place where I was only roaming, checking nfl.com on Opera to see if the colts won or not, and it still only took about 10% battery over the hour I was checking.

Re: I really don't get what you guys are doing to your batteries.

its mostly sprint users who are complaining and i think it has to do with a combination of things, 1) people are leaving apps like opera running. it chews the battery even idling, 2) sprints radio rom is suspected to suck large, 3) i have a feeling thereare some legitimatly bad devices / batteried out there. and 4) push mail is a pig. esspecially for sprint users.

Can you expand on this? I'm curious why you think push mail is a pig?

It's my understanding that when using push mail ("As items arrive") the Exchange server creates an entry w/ the IP address of the device, then both sides (client and server) sit and wait until a new msg arrives. Exchange then pushes the msg to the client.

When a schedule is defined, lets say for 15 minutes, then every 15 mins your device is opening a data connection and checking to see if new mail has arrived. With this method, regardless if there is new mail or not, a data connection is opened every 15 mins.

With push mail, however, if you dont recieve mail for an hour or two, then your device never opens a data connection to check. It simply waits until the server notifies it.

There are of course other areas where "push mail" may open a connection, for example, when you update a contact that is saved in outlook, etc... however, my experience has been that push mail is a battery saver, not a pig.

But maybe I am missing the point here?

Re: I really don't get what you guys are doing to your batteries.

it really depends how much/often you get email

think about it like this say you check every 30 min vs push and an email comes in every 5 min

with push- in that 30 min its synced the whole mailbox 6 times in 30 min
with every 30 min- its checked email 1 time getting all 6 emails at once
every 15 min- checked 2 times getting 3 each time

clearly with that pattern then push will sync the mailbox 3 or 6 times more often causing more drain.

it depends on your pattern of emails. If you receive email often and its not urgent you have it that minute, then pull can be better on battery life. If you dont receive a ton of email (10-20 a day) then either should be fine.

I have my exchange set for every hour because nothing i receive is urgent that very minute, as long as i see it within reasonable time that day. If i used push my battery would be dead in half a day due to the volume of emails that come in and the interval at which they do

I believe this is incorrect. Push does not sync the "whole mailbox" everytime you receive a msg. Its a one way "push".

Also, IMHO, your theory is flawed if you consider that, at night for example, most ppl do not receive alot, if any, email... so when you have it set to manually check every hour, then your device is checking every hour all thru the night, whereas with push mail your device could go all night without ever "checking in"....

Re: I really don't get what you guys are doing to your batteries.

The mogul was terrible on battery life too, however a few roms later, the device lasts almost 2 days for me. I think it's a matter of time when people figure out a few tricks and when HTC will release a new ROM that will make the device better on the battery.

Plus isn't the XButton not set to close when hitting the X close button? I remember everytime I flashed my mogul, I had to set the XButton to close on X. Maybe people didn't set this yet and apps are runnign in the background...

Yeah, I think you're missing it. You see the whole thing about "Push" is that mail is pushed from the server to the client. The data cannot be pushed if the client doesn't have a data connection. When you say, "It simply waits until the server notifies it," how do you think the server does that?

I typically get several hundred e-mails a day during the week. For me, there is no way I could do push without losing my battery half way through the workday.

Whether or not push mail is a batter saver really depends on the volume of e-mail or changes to contacts etc.

Like the OP though, I have no issue with battery life and I'm a fairly heavy user.

I'm on Sprint though. Wish push yeah, it's bad, but a lot of people are saying they don't have their email on push and it's still dying.
