Tethering options...Which is best?

Sometimes there's so much info out there it's hard to sift through. I've looked at howar* forums, xda, and sprintusers, but can't really find a good comparison for the many ways to tether...

So pdanet, WMWifiRouter and the included Internet Sharing included with the ROM I use...

Can anyone please detail the differences?

Is one better at not getting caught? Are they all the same in terms of speed?

I'd obviously like to go the free route too.

Will the Internet Sharing program included with DHarvey's rom work if I don't have ActiveSync on my laptop? I hate ActiveSync. When I connect my phone via USB though, it won't recognize the phone and says I have a Generic RNDIS connected.
