If you have an unlimited text plan I would use OZ. It is included in the rom.

If you want somthing that gives you text message type alerts, while running in the background or if your phone is idle, I HIGHLY recommend BeeJive, you can get it at www.touch-innovation.com

I also like Palringo. I use it most.

Another is Fring.com. It is kind of nice, has all the major chat clients. You can also use Skype in Fring or just voice over MSN instead of typing. One draw back of Fring is the typing is at the bottom of the window so the keyboard is constantly over top of the txt so you can't see spelling mistakes.
