N00b questions: Evdo and 1X

When I tether via ICS, Data works fine via evdo, but when a call comes in the phone goes to 1x. It was my understanding that you could do 1x data and be on the phone at the same time. Is this a true statement or does the phone go to 1x for cell service and you can't send/receive/sync and data until off a call?

Calls are always 1x - and if you're stuck in a 1x area (like me!) then you can't get calls when you're using data. - sheureka

I could have sworn that CDMA doesn't allow simultaneous phone/data use, whether it's 1x or EVDO.

I know on either EVDO or 1X I can't use data and phone simultaneously. Is there a hack to allow it?

No, you can't use data simultaneously with voice on CDMA. When a call comes in and you're browsing, it pauses the data connection and resumes it when you're done.
